The Raspberry Pi Model 3 is already a super-value-for-money-board. Designed to replace desktop computers and for easy integration into embedded projects, its quad-core processor and massive array of connectivity options allow for multiple uses across a huge array of disciplines. From education to home media centres, servers and IoT devices, the Pi Foundation has sold nearly 18 million Pi boards, and is in various projects across the world.
And things keep getting better: the Raspberry Pi Foundation has just released the Model B+ board. This new board is the fastest yet, offering a faster quad-core processor than its predecessor. The new ARM Cortex-A53 is a 64-bit SoC running at 1.4 GHz. This new chip has better thermal management than the standard Pi 3, which will be welcome for users who have it running and processing constantly, such as in servers and IoT devices.
Along with the processor upgrade comes an upgrade to the WiFi and ethernet. The WiFi is now dual-band 802.11ac, meaning it can now connect to the congested 5GHz band. The ethernet also jumps from 100mbps to Gigabit, offering access to theoretically better transfer speeds. Along with a speed increase, there is now also support for PoE (power over ethernet), along with a new PoE hat. The Bluetooth module also ups support from Bluetooth 4.1 to 4.2.
The Model 3 B+ uses exactly the same form factor, meaning all the ports and pins are in the same place so you can use your existing hats and cases. In true Pi fashion, the price hasn't increased and you can still get it for $35.
